Archiving

Configurable filters and rules define which files are to be archived with PoINT Archiver. The source directories can be located on any system throughout the network accessible for PoINT Archiver.
During an archive Job Cycle is executed, all files to be archived are collected and stored on Archive and Replication devices. PoINT Archiver supports most diverse technologies (hard disk, tape, optical media) and devices (single drives, autoloaders, production systems, jukeboxes and appliances), which can also be combined according to the user’s demands and specifications.
Moreover, PoINT Tiered Archive Files System (PoINT TAFS) for Windows allows the additional protection against non-authorized manipulations of files stored in the source directory (including permanent WORM mode). This way, the existing system will become part of a tiered archival concept.

Migration

PoINT Archiver is able to purge already archived files automatically. As for the easiest case, archived files are deleted in the source directory. In case of need the files have to be reproduced manually out of the archive. Furthermore, PoINT TAFS allows that files can be replaced by a link (“reparse point”) to the archive on the Windows system. This method is transparent for both users and applications and thus the workflow remains  unchanged. Files are accessed by the original path and PoINT Archiver provides the data directly out of the archive.

Optimizing Costs and Performance

Primary hard disks are expensive, if high performance and reliability are required. Moreover, unchanged and infrequently used data occupy the lion’s share of the total capacity. Centralized archiving systems have mostly been purchased for special applications like DMS for example.
By means of PoINT Archiver and PoINT TAFS files are moved to secondary storages and thus primary hard disk systems must be extended less often. This file based archiving solution enables various applications to use high-volume archival hardware, which leads to a more efficient operation of the system.
Offering equivalent performance, the energy consumption can be reduced significantly through a combination of hard disk, tape and optical media when compared to pure hard disk systems.

Security

To be able to detect possible manipulations of archived data, a digital fingerprint of the file and the archive-volume is stored in an encrypted way and afterwards archived in a database. Deleted or manipulated documents can be identified, reported to the administrator and recorded accordingly.
Optional encryption mechanism for the complete file system protects the archived data against unauthorized access. By the combination of a system key and various archive keys, files are also protected outside the specific PoINT Archiver installation. This method combines the advantages of removable media with the high level of security offered by closed systems.
